Sound Spirit: Therapeutic sound and movementThe vibrations of the human voice applied consciously as a therapeutic instrument have the resonating power to stimulate, release and balance the fine healing energies that create harmony and wholeness of body, mind and spirit. At every level from the cellular to the surrounding bio-energetic field of the body we are a great network of frequency vibrations which fluctuate, become weakened and literally go out of tune. If this disharmony becomes serious, disease can be the result. Through the focused, resonant use of the voice we have the capacity to alter our vibrations and our state of consciousness, be well-tuned and have true sound health. This process of toning and chanting is combined with simple movements, similar to Tai Chi and Chi Kung, which help to free the voice and direct the sound to specific energy centers and organs. The sounds are both externalized and internalized and lead to short periods of meditation where you can sense the healing effects on all aspects of yourself. In this state consciousness expands and deep peace descends In the workshops all the vibrations are given more potency through the ritualising of the sound and the group energy. Channels are kept open and no one has to produce vocal sound on their own. The quality of your voice is not the issue, only the deep intention behind it. No previous experience is necessary. There are many different approaches to the voicework including: # The use of the breath (diaphragmatic breathing) for the creation of maximum vocal sound and deep relaxation #Natural sound rituals such as laughter for emotional release and mental clarity #Therapeutic sound mantras combining particular consonants and vowels for different aspects of body/mind/spirit #Toning the chakras for the release of energy blockages #Taoist healing sounds for the organs of the body #Sonic attunement of the nervous system through the use of tuning forks #Sacred chants from the spiritual traditions of India, Islam and the North American Indians #Discovery of your own fundamental note for toning #Techniques for producing overtones for centering the mind #Collective vocal improvisation for freedom of expression James D'Angelo is author of the book 'The Healing Power of the Human Voice' |
“The voice is a light. If the light
becomes dim, it has not gone out; it is there. It is the same with the
voice. If it does not shine, it only means that it has been cultivated
and you must cultivate it again and it will shine once more.” |
